The following precautions should be taken when using measuring instruments of all types:

(1) Clean both the measuring faces of the instruments and the work-piece very carefully to remove all dirt's, oil, and metal chip.
(2) Check the instrument for accuracy before using. Adjust and re-check, if necessary.
(3) Do not use on any moving surface.
(4) Do not hold the instrument on the hands for longer than is necessary. The heat of the hand is sufficient to cause an expansion which will affect the accuracy of the reading.
(5) Keep the measuring faces at right angles to the work-piece.
(6) Avoid excessive pressures on micrometer spindle. Use the ratchet. Do not over strain the fine adjustment device on the vernier caliper.
(7) Do not use measuring instrument for any purpose for which they were not designed.
(8) Do not throw precision instrument down on to the bench - keep them apart from ordinary tools and always return them to their cases when not actually in use.
(9) Clean after use and give a thin film of non - corrosure oil.
